I’m often asked about multimodal communication and what this means for the AAC user. To me, multimodal communication involves using every resource at your disposal to get your message across to your communication partner(s).  It is more than just using an AAC device or communication board.  Multimodal communication is the same for everyone, whether we use AAC or have a ‘natural’ voice.  This involves providing your communication partner with as many hints, tips and clues as you can.  This helps others unpack what you wish to communicate.  AAC users, just like everyone else, communicate using body language, facial expression, eye movements, signs and gestures, plus using props from the environment around them.

But more than that, when we use powered AAC, we also have access to so much more.  AAC devices are powerful personal communication tools.  We can share photos, videos, poetry, get out a map, look together at a spreadsheet, even play a video game.  Our devices are our personal communication resources, and we should all be allowed to be creative in the way we choose to use them.

Please make sure they are always available to use, wherever we may be.  It is, of course, our choice when to use AAC but there is no choice if it is not available.

Take a look at this short video, which explains my thoughts around multimodal communication and the importance of personal communication devices.
